Interior Designer, 3D Modeler

Pitch

UNUM is a product submission for the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Student Design Awards Competition. The theme given was based off the Circular Futures Challenge. Our main priority was to apply the principles of design to improve a preexisting product or system of the fast moving consumer goods market. After brainstorming, our team decided to improve the design of personal hygiene products.

Refection

Throughout the design process, I held the sole responsibility of designing and modeling the shopping environment that would distribute our product. Before designing, I scouted out stores such as Walmart and Shoppers Drug Mart to get a better understanding of the layout.

Once I wire-framed out the blueprint, the team and I refined it with some A/B  testing. After everything was resolved, I bought everything into Maya and started modeling.

Looking back, the hardest challenge I faced was managing the placements. Due to the large amount of objects in the scene, if one thing glitches out, the objects around the problem will also face the same consequences. I overcame this issue by first planning around the key elements of the scene. By sorting things out and dividing the groups, I was able to prevent any major issues, and focus more of my energy on portraying the overall concept.

Refection

My final project for the 3D modeling course was to take everything we learned during the past 4 months and focus on 2 specialties to produce a final piece. In the end, I decided to focus on interior environment scene because environment design has never been my pro-front and I have always been interested in studying the subject.

What I came out with at the end was a better understating of texturing, lighting and UV mapping, A lot of planning is needed to make something look realistic in a rendered setting. The key is allow the indication of material and how we can differentiate one object from other. While the final work can still be improved, I believe it has completed its objective of respecting a living space.

Modeling

While studying abroad, I decided to take an introduction to 3D animating course. The world of 3D graphics was very new to me. There was differently a learning curve as the program was very foreign and the functions were very difference to control. For my first assignment, I attempted to model a mushroom, but soon realised the difficulties of making an organic object. However, I stuck with it and created my first 3D model.

Animation

3D Animation can be very complex and time consuming for both beginners and experts. Due to the lack of time and experience, this animation was created using an already rigged model provided by the professor. I chose to recreate a backstroke animation because it maximizes the models rigging capabilities.

For this project, I used the mushroom I modelled in the previous project along with a simple character model. I used two different techniques to create 2 different environments, one being a foggy morning and the other an evening sunset.
